Arson attack 'threat to life'

A community worker in Londonderry has said an overnight arson attack could have had serious consequences.

Twelve wheelie bins near pensioners' homes were destroyed in the fire in Rosemount.

The fire service was called to the blaze which was discovered at about 0500 BST on Thursday morning.

Local community worker, Tommy McCourt, described the fire as "a potential threat to life."

"This is an act of sheer and utter vandalism, there can be no excuse for it," he said.

"There is anger and fear in the neighbourhood, some residents including pensioners are worried that a tragedy could occur."
