SNP wins in council's by-election

The SNP have won a by-election held in Highland Council's Wick ward with Labour coming second and an independent candidate in third place.

Nationalist Gail Ross won with 1,049 votes following a third stage under single transferable count rules.

Labour's Neil MacDonald had 463 votes and independent Niall Smith 245.

Liberal Democrat Claire Clark was fourth with 236. Conservative Michael Carr was one of three of the seven candidates eliminated during the count.

The by-election was held after independent councillor Katrina MacNab stepped down.
