Army yet to confirm city parade

RIRThen two regiments are currently serving in Afghanistan

Belfast City Council has voted to approve a homecoming parade for the Royal Irish Regiment and the Irish Guards returning from Afghanistan.

The motion was backed by the DUP, UUP and Alliance parties, but opposed by the SDLP and Sinn Fein. The final vote was 26 to 20.

There were protests at a previous parade in 2008.

The council said the motion was dealt with by a straight vote without a debate.

The parade is expected to take place towards the end of May.
